Preparing Your Septic System for a North Dakota Winter

October 15, 2025Megan

If you've lived in Western North Dakota for more than one winter, you know what's coming: weeks of sub-zero temperatures, frozen ground, and wind chills that make you question your life choices. Your septic system can handle the cold — but only if you take a few precautions before the deep freeze sets in.

Pump Before Winter

The single most important thing you can do is have your tank pumped in the fall before the ground freezes. A full tank is more vulnerable to freezing and backup issues. Starting winter with a clean, properly pumped tank gives your system the best chance of making it through without problems.

Insulate the Access Lid Area

If your tank lid is close to the surface, consider covering the area with a layer of straw, mulch, or foam insulation board. This helps retain ground heat and prevents the lid and inlet pipe from freezing solid.

Keep Water Flowing

Believe it or not, regular water use actually helps keep your system from freezing. The warm water from daily household use — showers, laundry, dishes — keeps the tank temperature above freezing. If you're leaving for an extended period, consider having someone check on the property or use a slow drip from a faucet.

Don't Drive Over the Drain Field

In summer this is good advice. In winter it's critical. Compacting snow over the drain field removes the insulating layer and dramatically increases the risk of freezing in the distribution pipes.
