When we mention "crust busting" to customers for the first time, we usually get a puzzled look. It sounds a little intimidating, but it's actually a routine part of septic maintenance — and it can save you from a very expensive problem down the road.
What Is Crust?
Inside your septic tank, waste separates into three layers:
- Scum (top): Fats, oils, and floating solids form a layer at the surface.
- Effluent (middle): The liquid layer that flows out to the drain field.
- Sludge (bottom): Heavy solids that sink and accumulate over time.
Over time — especially in tanks that go years without service — the scum layer hardens into a thick, dense crust. This crust can become so solid that a standard pump truck can't break it up or remove it.
What Does Crust Busting Do?
Crust busting uses high-pressure water jets to break up that hardened layer, turning it back into a slurry that can then be pumped out. Without this step, the crust stays in the tank and continues to build up, eventually blocking the inlet baffle and causing sewage to back up into your home.
Do You Need It?
You may need crust busting if:
- Your tank hasn't been pumped in 5+ years
- You've noticed slow drains or gurgling sounds
- A previous service provider mentioned heavy buildup
- You recently purchased an older property and don't know the service history
How We Handle It
When we arrive on-site, we inspect the tank before pumping. If we see significant crust buildup, we'll let you know and walk you through what we recommend. We never upsell services you don't need — if the tank looks good, we'll tell you that too.
